SDM Training Tools
IRH has developed resources for training a range of service providers using different approaches on the Standard Days Method® (SDM). Providers can participate in traditional classroom, 2-hour or 1-day workshops, self-study, or computer-based training. Some training approaches can be adapted for multiple audiences, including physicians & nurses; auxiliary nurses; social workers; international health professionals; and community health workers.
Online and Distance Learning Modules
Online Training for Healthcare Practitioners
Provides computer-literate healthcare practitioners who have Internet access with interactive instructional modules on the SDM for self-paced learning. Nurses and midwives, based in the U.S., may also apply for 2.0 continuing education credits.

USAID eLearning Course on the SDM
This self-instructional self-paced course for USAID Population, Health and Nutrition Officers and Cooperating Agency staff addresses SDM basics, eligibility criteria, method use, counseling, medical barriers, and program experiences. Designed to be completed in about two hours the course combines technical content with program principles, best practices and case studies.

Self-study course using a distance learning methodology
The course offers a low-cost alternative for institutions to offer SDM training without requiring providers to leave their worksites. It offers providers a self-instructional self-paced manual for learning the SDM and includes a companion Guideline for institutions on how to implement the course. Provides a post-test and a certificate to the learner completing the course.

Two-hour Contraceptive Technology Update for Health Care Professionals
Curriculum for introducing the SDM to skilled health care professionals experienced in counseling in family planning and reproductive health. Addresses scientific basis of SDM, medical eligibility criteria, informed choice, using CycleBeads to teach the SDM, and including it in RH/FP services. Accredited by Georgetown University's School of Nursing and Health Studies for 2.4 CEUs for US-based nurses.

One-day SDM Training for Service Providers

A package of resources for training community health workers, using hands-on, low-literacy and interactive training approaches. It includes adaptable lesson plans and supportive materials for developing training courses for teaching community health workers how to use CycleBeads® to teach clients how to use the SDM.

Pre-Service Curriculum
Pre-service education module for SDM
The module provides sample lesson plans to guide the incorporation of the SDM into the pre-service training curricula of schools of medicine and nursing. The module includes four chapters addressing fertility awareness-based methods, the scientific basis of the SDM, medical eligibility criteria and counseling in the SDM. Each chapter includes a lesson plan, suggestions on key content, sample case studies, approaches that educators can use to present each topic, learner handouts and bibliography.

Multi-media Tutorials
CD-ROM Tutorial
The tutorial uses a multimedia approach to provide continuing education and technical updates on the SDM to computer literate health-care professionals. The approach includes audio and power point presentations, and links to articles, resources and supporting materials. The tutorial explains the biological basis for the SDM, its efficacy, how it works and its benefits for programs. SDM Counseling Video, User's and Discussion Guide
An eight-part video presenting different client counseling situations standardizes and reinforces trainer-led instruction in SDM counseling. It supplements trainer instruction and helps engage participants in discussing real-life counseling issues. The user's guide facilitates the integration of the video into different training curricula and the Discussion Guide suggests approaches for using the counseling situations.
