The Institute for Reproductive Health
(IRH), Georgetown University, is pleased to present
the Fertility Awareness-based Methods (FAM) Project.
Awarded by the United States Agency for International
Development (USAID) in September 2007, the project’s
goal is to increase access to and use of FAM –
in particular the Standard Days Method® (SDM), the
TwoDay Method® (TDM) and the Lactational Amenorrhea
Method (LAM) – within the framework of informed
choice.
The FAM Project builds upon the experience
of previous USAID-funded projects in which IRH developed,
tested and introduced FAM in diverse family planning
programs in over 20 countries around the world. FAM
Project objectives are to:
- Develop, test and document strategies
for establishing and scaling-up the integration of
FAM into family planning programs in 8-10 focus countries;
- Address unmet need and bring new people
to family planning by expanding choices to include
FAM; and
- Increase access to FAM through partnerships
with public and private sectors, community groups,
faith-based organizations, and international reproductive
health networks.
With a continued emphasis on research-to-practice,
IRH works with partners at the community, national and
international levels to create a supportive policy environment
for FAM, build capacity and develop tools to offer high-quality
FAM services, and generate and apply best practices.
As USAID’s technical leader for FAM for over 20
years, IRH is the primary implementing organization
of the project working in collaboration with a select
group of partners recognized for their expertise and
leadership. FAM Project partners and their roles are
as follows:
- Macro International provides support
to monitoring and evaluation efforts, enabling IRH
to measure progress against FAM project objectives
as well as the overall impact of FAM integration in
focus countries.
- The Population Council assists with
the FAM project’s research agenda, providing
technical assistance in a variety of research areas.
- Jhpiego is focusing on LAM, developing
training and advocacy materials and integrating LAM
into field programs.
- IntraHealth International supports capacity-building
efforts by helping to incorporate FAM into pre-service
education and the work of professional associations.
- Abt Associates supports activities to
engage the private sector, including building a model
business plan to support organizations interested
in promoting the SDM through partnerships and commercial
channels.
- SRA Futures is working to create a supportive
policy environment for FAM by assisting in the development
of a global strategy for building capacity among stakeholders
who can advocate for further integration of FAM.
- Population Services International’s
focus is on social marketing CycleBeads® in selected
countries, expanding access through a variety of community-based
and commercial strategies.
