Uganda– Overview of Country Activities:
The Institute for Reproductive Health is collaborating
with the AFFORD project in Uganda to address the
unmet need for family planning by increasing access
to and use of the Standard Days Method® (SDM)
and CycleBeads® as part of the contraceptive
method mix. The AFFORD Project is a five year
initiative funded by USAID that uses innovative
marketing to create a broad impact on Uganda’s
public health. Their capacity building, sustainable
projects connect international resources with
in-country resources and people to provide health
products and services to individuals, families
and communities. The Institute’s activities
focus on building capacity among Ugandan trainers,
program managers, faith-based groups, and health
services providers to introduce the SDM into the
“menu” of methods they offer. The
Institute is also providing two, two-day training-of-trainers
sessions for approximately 20 clinicians and 20
members of faith-based groups as well as sending
two master trainers from Rwanda and one from Zambia
to conduct the training and facilitate south-to-south
technical exchanges. In addition, the Institute
will be providing further technical assistance,
including review of product inserts, packages
and brands; review of promotional materials; and
assistance in development of an evaluation plan
for the SDM and CycleBeads in Uganda.
