
Turkey– Overview of Country Activities:
Marmara University, in Istanbul Turkey, is conducting
a study comparing the acceptance, use and continuation
of the Standard Days Method in relation to other
methods offered in the health centers of Ministry
of Health. Twelve health centers in Umraniye Health
Region are participating in this study which is
following up women who accept a family planning
method. Follow-up interviews are conducted every
three months by phone and seek to ascertain method
satisfaction and continuation as well as method
failure. In addition to the SDM, the health centers
participating in the study offer the IUD, injectable
contraceptives, pill and condom as a part of the
routine services. To date, the SDM is the second
most popular method after the IUD. Marmara University
trained the providers to offer the SDM and CycleBeads,
provided by IRH, are offered to women who accept
the SDM. The study’s principal investigator
is Dr. Sanda Cali who is a Professor of Public
Health. Other investigators participating in the
study are Associate Prof.Dr. Sibel Kalaca and
Dr Zerrin Kursun.
