Senegal – Overview of Country Activities:
The Institute for Reproductive Health received
funding from the USAID mission in Senegal to provide
technical assistance and training on the Standard
Days Method (SDM) to Management Sciences for Health
(MSH). The Institute trained trainers in August-September
2005 from the central governmental level and from
all 11 regions of the country. The trainers have
since replicated provider training by region in
order to introduce the SDM into the government’s
multi-method family planning program nation-wide.
The Division Sante de la Reproduction (DSR) has
already included the SDM in its newly revised
draft of family planning policy and plans to include
it in various supervision guides and training
curricula. .

Country Updates
An activity to raise awareness about family planning
and the SDM as a new natural option was organized
by Tostan Community Management Committee in collaboration
with local Ministry of Health staff in mid January.
As the Institute’s IEC implementing partner,
Tostan brought together religious and community
leaders, government officials as well as individuals
from various ethnic groups. Key themes and messages
focused on healthy birth spacing and family planning
as essential practices to improve quality of life
that are also supported by Islamic doctrine. Messages
were relayed through a number of popular and entertaining
mediums, including theater, music and poetry.
