Romania– Overview of Country Activities:
The Institute for Reproductive Health provided
technical assistance and training to John Snow,
Incorporated (JSI) to begin introduction of the
Standard Days Method (SDM) into existing family
planning / reproductive health services. JSI has
trained Roma Health Mediators, a group of community
workers trained to increase the use of health
services by members of the Roma (sometimes referred
to as Gypsy) communities, to offer the SDM. In
addition, JSI included the SDM in the curriculum
for family doctors, introduced the method in selected
family planning clinics and translated job aids
and client materials into Romanian. An article
on the SDM was published in the Romanian Journal
of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Country Updates
Romania’s association for family planning
(SECS) learned of the SDM at orientation sessions
conducted by the Institute and JSI, and has expressed
interest in expanding its method mix to include
the SDM. The Institute is currently in communication
with SECS to explore this possibility.
