Peru – Overview of Country Activities:
The Standard Days Method (SDM) is currently available
in over 340 Ministry of Health (MOH) facilities,
including hospitals and secondary health centers,
and almost 300 rural health posts in the province
of San Martin. Currently, there are 570 trained
providers and over 320 community health promoters
offering SDM services in addition to providers
in a small number of sites operated by non-governmental
organizations (NGOs), faith-based organizations
(FBOs), and police and military facilities. In
June 2004, the Ministry of Health included the
SDM in its national norms.
Peru has also been the site for most of the Institute’s
large studies, including the SDM efficacy trial,
long-term follow-up and introductions studies.
Efficacy trials for the TwoDay Method were also
conducted in Peru, as is the ongoing operations
research.

Country Updates
Peru is one of three participating countries
in a study that will assess the impact of scaling-up
interventions on the SDM at the service, community
and program levels. This study will look at the
extent to which providers offer SDM in a non-biased
manner, the diffusion of knowledge about the SDM,
and the effects of SDM introduction on provider
caseloads and contraceptive prevalence.
