Ecuador– Overview of Country Activities:
The Standard Days Method (SDM) was integrated
into CEMOPLAF reproductive health centers in 11
provinces throughout the country, as well as into
Ministry of Health norms and the government’s
maternity program, which provides free pre-natal,
delivery, and post-natal care. CEMOPLAF, a major
family planning non-governmental organization,
is also becoming the principal training and technical
resource for the SDM in Ecuador, with the capacity
to provide technical assistance and generate resources
from the sale of materials, and support from other
institutions.

Country Updates
A social marketing effort to offer the SDM through
pharmacies and commercial outlets is being tested
and the following activities are underway:
- A community level survey to assess
the impact of the social marketing campaign
in the communities where the SDM has been introduced;
- A simulated client study to test
provider and pharmacist knowledge; and
- A follow-up study to compare correct
use between users who obtained the SDM from
a pharmacy to those who obtained it from a clinic.

Introducing the Standard Days Method into CEMOPLAF
Health Services
The Institute is assisting the Centro Médico
de Orientación y Planificación Familiar
(CEMOPLAF), a non-governmental organization, to
introduce the Standard Days Method into the services
of eight of its 24 health centers. In four clinics
CEMOPLAF provides only reproductive health services,
and the services are provided only at the clinics.
In four other clinics, health and reproductive
services are offered along with agriculture and
livestock education and promotion provided by
both health and agriculture promoters and clinic
staff. CEMOPLAF is also comparing two protocols
for the SDM; one involving a single provider visit
and a second requiring two visits. View
