Democratic Republic of Congo – Overview
of Country Activities:
With support from the USAID mission, the Institute
of Reproductive Health is introducing the Standard
Days Method (SDM) into established networks of
clinics and pharmacies in collaboration with eight
family planning and community development organizations.
Over 102 trainers from these organizations have
been trained in the SDM and have, in turn, trained
approximately 928 providers and 860 community
health promoters. As of September 2005, the SDM
was available in 197 clinics and 161 pharmacies.
The method is being promoted through IEC and BCC
activities that rely on community health promoters,
print materials, and radio campaigns. Qualitative
research will explore reasons for continuing and
discontinuing use of the method, how couples manage
the fertile days, and method acceptability.

Country Updates
Currently, three research studies are also underway:
an assessment of the SDM training program, a study
to determine the impact of the social marketing
campaign, and a general evaluation of the SDM
integration program. Due to the high cost of conducting
a country wide study, assessments will focus mainly
on services based in Kinshasa and Lubumbashi.
CRS will also conduct an independent assessment
of their SDM activities in Katako-kombe.
