Benin – Overview of Country Activities:
The Institute for Reproductive Health first introduced
the Standard Days Method (SDM) in Benin in December
2000, through an operations research (OR) study
that was implemented in two urban centers: Cotonou
and Parakou. Institute partners in this effort
included the Ministry of Health (MOH), the Beninese
Association for Family Promotion (ABPF) and OSV-Jordan,
a nongovernmental organization. Study results
showed a strong demand and high acceptability
for the method and that it could be offered effectively
through existing service delivery channels.
Following this introductory experience, the MOH
requested assistance to expand the program through
existing sites in the country, and they officially
launched the SDM expansion program in December
2004. Numerous community distribution channels
are currently offering the SDM through 131 sites
in six departments of Benin.
