Institute for Reproductive Health Our Work

Our Work

Since our founding in 1985, Georgetown University's Institute for Reproductive Health (IRH) has contributed to a range of health initiatives and is dedicated to helping women and men make informed choices about their reproductive health. In particular, our work focuses on:

Through our research and implementation of evidence-based program practices, we strive to: expand choice by increasing access to FAM worldwide; empower women by helping them learn about and take charge of their reproductive and sexual health - from very young adolescents to adults; and involve communities – including women, men and adolescents - in reproductive health interventions. With more than twenty years of experience in over thirty countries worldwide, we bring the following strengths to each of our endeavors:

  • A focus on critical needs and gaps in reproductive health, including increasing family planning options, decreasing stigma and discrimination in HIV/AIDS programs, and increasing access to reproductive health services and information at the community level
  • Skills in applying quantitative and qualitative research to design and implement evidence-based programs
  • Research-to-practice strategies at every level, from central approaches to working with communities
  • Translating complex concepts of fertility research into simple and practical guidance for service providers and couples
  • Forming a wide variety of partnerships to strengthen capacity for sustainable services
  • Scaling up successful programs and documenting the process to provide models for others
  • Expertise in empowering women, couples and adolescents
  • Training and ongoing support of healthcare providers with a focus on simple, sustainable tools and approaches
